Starting to get along on the boat.. one of the biggest things i need to do is fisx the coffin cover.. its heavy, water logged and soft.. i knew this buying the boat but figured it was because it was a panel.. the rest of the floor is solid.. so heres where im at.. got a couple hrs work in.. all i got left is to sand and recore.. im gonna let it dry out a little before i start sanding..
this is what i started with
Image

got the bottom layer of glass off
Image

cleaned down to the glass for the most part..

Been there done that! There is thread on CAS from a few years ago where I redid mine. Looked just like yours when I peeled off the bottom skin and core.

Edit: Here it is! http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4360&hilit=coffin+cover+rebuild

well.... the wood lasted for a while so it will get wood.. im going to use 3 strips length wise with a little gap in between.. going to sand everything down and mix up some thickened resin.. then sandwich the wood and top of lid with some thickened resin..(i grabbed some cabsoil today) .. then before i glass the bottom im going to fill in the gaps with some pb and a light layer over the wood.. then some glass to finish it up..

the boat is 25 years old.. as you can tell from the pics most of the water entered from where the cooler seat was bolted down. then a little around the access covers and very little from the batt tray.. nothing had any kind of sealant on it, the screws for the batt tray had loctite.. sSc_eek

im also exploring my options with another as, so this one might get traded.. hopefully

got a little more work done.. changed up the original plan and just used one whole piece of wood
all sanded down
Image
some "blue" tape.. this stuff is amazing, it sticks to everything but resin doesnt stick to it
Image
now for some weight, both cans are 1/2 full of water..
Image

so what i ended up doing was mixing up some resin and putting it on the wood.. did a nice thick coat.. then i mixed up a nice thick pb with some cabsoil and put it on the skin.. put the 2 together and applied weight.. i mixed the pb a little on the cold side, ill let that setup overnight and most of the day tomorrow.. then to finish it

Looking good! Thats more weight than I used on mine. I added a couple of stiffeners across the bottom of mine. Still solid as a rock after a couple of years. Like you said the problems probably came from unsealed screws.

ok now for everyone to loose faith in me.. i cut a big ass hole in the front of the cover.. heres the story behind that.. when i got the boat the tank had a few holes in the top and one in the bottom that was leaking.. everywhere i called to try to get one made were quoting me almost 1k$ shipped.. local wouldnt even touch it for less than like 1500$.. i dont have that kind of budget.. so for 150 shipped i got a 21 gallon poly tank.. problem is the top sticks above the coffin about 3".. i dont need a 50 gallon tank as i will never have the money to fill it.. i also have over half of the coffin empty so if i can throw a few hundered together i can have one made to fit there for "extra" fuel.. and for offshore i got a buddy with a little bit bigger boat that i have no problem splitting fuel costs..

I don't get it. If you really don't need the "extra gas" why not use it as a cooler, live well, or just storage? Unless I am confused with the different angles and that is where the CC will be sitting.

that box sits under the center console, behind the live well but about 12" from the back opening of the console.. if that makes any sense.. and its not extra fuel its the only fuel

That's the same thing I need to do when I rebuild my 170. The wood in the console is soaked - drilled a hole low in the inside side and water started dripping out - should be pretty easy to get out, like your's, once I cut the glass around the edges.
