Ok boys and girls i picked up a new project the other day.. this boat is solely for a flip and make a few bucks.. these boats are the aquasports of the texas coast. highly sought after and go for a pretty penny.. ugliest boats but are super functional.. Its 12ft long, 5ft wide and has a flat bottom.. but its also a cat, it has a tunnel all the way back.. this thing should be able to get into about 3".

So heres what im working with. Deck is solid but is ugly as sin
Image
Image
im seriously out of room in my garage, and cant keep a boat or trailer out front..
Image

First order of business is to get that big console out of the way.. there is no need for a console to be that big.. not to mention it wasnt sealed very good and rotting away..
Image
Cut the front lip a little bit and first thought was chit.
Image
Image

Well guess its a good thing they build the boat first and then put the console on.. it was tabbed in with maybe 2 layers of 1808..
Image
Image

it looks like someone put some house paint on it to make it tan/brown.. less than 5 mins with a sander and 80 grit i got this next pic.. i have a feeling it will take me about 4-6hrs to sand the hull down ready for paint.. the deck will be after the bottom is done.

So now that the console is pulled off, time to strip every thing.. the way the control box was mounted, it was bass akwards from any other center console.. Low and behold these control boxes can be flipped to work on either side.. thats a super cheap bonus!

Set up for left side out
Image
this would be the right side
Image

open it up and there is the kill laynard and the motor buzzer, that can be flipped to the other side.
Image
VOILA!
It is now a control box to be mounted on the right side of the console..

Now onto the motor, who the hell knows how long this thing has sat so it needs the carb pulled and cleaned for sure..

Image

now i needed to get the year of the motor.. Johnson are some pretty crafty fellers and came up with a system.. INTRODUCES is the key word where its a number from 1-0.. in my case the ES would equal 90.. motor is a 1990.. how cool is that

So after having to remove the starter i finally got the carb off.. opened it up and oh boy! thios is gonna have to be dipped for a few days

Go Corey Go!!! I'm not gonna say anything about it's looks, if it works, it works. You guys must have miles of skinny water in the area, as I can't see that type of boat in anything but.

Do the work, make some money...then get yourself into a good looking boat! :1121_wink:

Now on to some pretty crazy jack plate.. this system works great on this boat but is a long way away from where we are now..

lever in the console with a pressure relief valve
Image

that sends fluid to make this ram go up (with pressure) or down with the valve is open
Image

and slides in this track.. so weirrd but also really cool
Image

I would like to keep the system but would like to upgrade it to an electric ram instead of the crazy manual one.. so im on the look out for a trim tab or something similar.

Bob we have crazy amount of skinny water here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laguna_Mad ... ted_States)

The lagoon is shallow and narrow, averaging only 3.6 feet (1.1 m) in depth and 4 miles (6.4 km) to 6 miles (9.7 km) in width. The depth is only 0.66 feet (20 cm) to 1.1 feet (34 cm) in the areas not dredged to form the 12-foot (3.7 m) deep, 138-foot (42 m) wide Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which runs the bay's length[10] and joins the upper and lower stretches.[2] Two types of hard reef are found in the lagoon bed and on the shoreline, including beach rock reefs (shell and sand bound by calcium carbonate cement) common south of Baffin Bay due to the occasional shifts in the Laguna Madre coastal shoreline; and Serpulid reefs, common in Baffin Bay, and elsewhere in the system, formed between 300 and 3,000 years ago by the annelid's calcareous tubes.[2]

Corey,
I don't think an electric ram like a Lenco actuator is gonna be up to snuff to raise the motor. But then, when you lower the tabs, there is a hell of a lot of water pressure on the tab that the actuator must overcome...

I may be wrong on this one...

well the way i see it is the motor weighs 115lbs, it only has to travel a couple inches. going up in the tunnel should be less resistance as you go up. trim tabs have to push down water across a 12x12 (ish) plate.. thats got to be well over 115lbs of pressure wouldnt you think? hell i might be way off into left field.

well it has officiall been 50hrs since i bought the boat lol.. I got a few plans drawn up
Center console. basically under the console on the bottom will be a 6 gal gas tank with the room for 2. then on the shelf will be a battery box with the option to add another, with some room left over.. in the seat will be storage, thats a big thing this design lacks.. so 2 life jackets will fit well with a little room left over.
Image

Deck layout, will probably change but not much. its hard putting 10lbs of crap in a 5lb bag. i think 13" between the cooler and console wont work well.. but with the old console gone and this new one im gaining good amount of room on the side of the console.. i went from 6" from console to edge to 18"

Dag Corey that looks cool! Is that console going to be tall enough to stand behind easily? And just thinking on the KISS principal are you sure you want to go with electrics for the jack plate, how uptown you thinking of making the sled? That is funky and cool with the hand pump and adds shade tree class, my kind of engineering! Same idea as a porta-power and those things are gorilla proof!

actually the console is a bit on the short side.. but most guys who buy these things put platforms, ect.. so im not putting a ton into it because each person who gets these do something different..

well after a week off, i hit the ground running this morning.. got the edges rounded off and started on my first layer of mat. the mat is to make my life easier when i start using the woven. it really does nothing structural. a little trick i learned a while back is if you cut your mat to size and then use a little super 77 spray glue, every thing stays in place and you can brush on your resin.. makes life really easy when your dealing with temps in the 90's as the resin likes to set up pretty quick

Dburr as much as i would like to keep it simple, the original gorilla way of doing it is impractical for potential buyers. with as little as 2" of being able to go up, this thing will get into some serious skinny water. I got the motor off and the wood out of the sliding part of the transom. dont know if it was ever redone but if its 1970 original its one of the best transoms ive ever seen. i guess its not a big deal when it actually doesnt sit in the water.
