Hi Guys, I have a 1997 200 hp Johnson. All the other pistons are 100 lbs or so. The lower power side piston is 80. Doesn't sound good.
I am considering having the powerhead rebuilt and upgraded electronics from CDI. Also, have it converted and just run premix.
You guys have anyone you favor for the rebuild? I am willing to ship the powerhead to the East Coast.

Thanks in advanced,

B

Man a 97. You figure your looking at about 2k total for rebuild, shipping and all that other jazz. is it worth that to you?

Try giving Roberta a call at Marine Rebuild Specialist here in Clearwater. They did the machine work on my Etec.

That's sort of where I'm at, mine is nickel and dimming me to death, down in the keys it seemed like I was burning alot of oil, oh boy was I, almost 3 gallons for 100 gallons of gas used, I hate to dump more $ into a motor thats only worth 2 grand on a good day but until I find that money tree people talk about I'm stuck.

I am ok spending a few grand to fix it. I would want it done right though. All remanufactured and new electronics. I am thinking of a few options, just putting it out there. You guys always have solid information, I like to hear what you think.

I know that I am late on this, but here is a thought. Have you pulled the head off to take a look? Maybe it could be a stuck ring or maybe even a section of the head gasket blown out at that cylinder? I know that they say 10% between all cylinders, but you are not that far off from the 10% if that one is 80 and the rest are 100. It's not like that cylinder is 0 or 20.

If the head gasket looks good, I would try a seafoam decarb and see what happens.

Here is an update. We pulled the heads and saw no damage at all. In fact, very clean cylinders. We tilted the outboard up. Then we sprayed some ring free into each cylinder. We did this over several days and turned it by hand. After that we did some MMMO. We cleaned the cylinders and did another compression check.
The cylinder pressure is now at 125 +- a pound or so across the board. All cylinders were very close. We then check all the wiring and replaced some fuel lines. The power pack connections were all cleaned up and grounds were tightened. We added in some fresh fuel and fired her up. A couple little stumbles at first. About the 3 or 4 crank, she took off and ran perfect. She sounded really good and had great throttle response. We should be good to give her a try.

Good Job Bryan, that is decent compression right there. Those motors are almost bullet proof.

Great job. At least now you have a warm fuzzy feeling about the motor!

Hi Guys, Yes, I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised when she started. She sounded really well, very solid. It is amazing what a little maintenance would have prevented.

HI Guys, Hope all is well. I have been busy, but I have an update. I took the motor down to a friends shop in Dana Point. He cleaned up the outboard, got it running, real nice. It is almost perfect compression and runs excellent. He called the shop on the sticker.
They said it is a very low hour motor. It had very little use. We might have scored big time.

I have been really busy in Maui. We bought and are restoring an apartment complex. 34 units with a 4000 SF business in front. It has taken some time but coming out very nice.
The Mako is completely rewired and is looking good. I will post up some photos once completed.

Have a great Thanksgiving,

B

Bryan,
You have always had the magic touch. Great score again. May you eat lots of bird and have a great time.

Yes, I think we scored big time. I am leaving for Maui tonight. I will post up some photos in a couple of weeks. She is coming out real nice.
