Yanmar is teaming with a German company to market a 50 HP diesel outboard. Pretty interesting design with twin crankshafts and 2 connecting rods per piston. Apparently this helps reduce vibration. This would be a pretty cool setup on a 170, and a pair of them would be cool on a 222. Yes, only 50 HP, but that's diesel HP, which means lots of torque and good fuel economy. Check it out:

Sounds cool. Mercury has been making the Diesel Optimax for the military for a while. I believe they available for sale to the public now I think they are 180 HP each.

I don't think the Mercury 175 diesel is available to the public yet. I think it has to do with emissions testing. I've heard you can actually run a regular Optimax on diesel fuel, and Mercury says the military diesel shares 75% of the parts with the gas version.

Did you see the price? $28,000 MSRP for the military-only Mercury 175 diesel outboard. That's about twice what the gas Optimax 200 goes for...

Have you seen the OXE Diesel outboard? I just found out about it yesterday. Same deal intended for the military single fuel mandate. I really like the idea of the belt drive for the lower unit. Also the water pump etc are all accessible from the powerhead without dropping the lower unit. http://www.oxe-diesel.com/

That belt drive is pretty neat! The OXE design should be cost-competitive, as it gets rid of some expensive parts. We will see...

I didn't see the weight 772 is heavy. I belive the Seven Marine outboards are closed circuit cooling as well.

I really like the belt drive idea, solves all kinds of issues. I'm surprised Seven Marine didn't do that. Much simpler than their twin pinion gear drive. Of course 600hp would require one heck of a belt.
